Manichean Candidates. The Rage of Polarized Followers - Dualism as Propaganda Tool

Updates to Budget Policy Differences 2012.
Tracing the Rage of A Committed Opposition in Political Matters 2012.
A current look at this venerable idea:  The Manichean Influence.

Weapons of Language, Demonizing a Worldview
Religious Polarizers Pointed the Finger at "Evildoers."
In morality matters, they still do.

Political Polarizers following the Bush "evildoer"-hunt years, recycle the idea: those after 2008 morphed it into procedural illegitimacy, a threat to established order.  For morality issues, "evildoers" remains.

Even with other words, not so loaded, old forms of Manicheanism re-surge in Modern Politics -- The Manichean Candidate Candidates, Elected Officials, Religious Leaders Take Manicheanism a Step Beyond:
To "Enforcement" and Punishment of the Declared Evildoers

Newly harsh conflicts in our pluralistic culture and politics reflect old ideas. Try this model for possible understanding the duality and the passions.

1.  Manicheanism

Manicheanism is an old form of religious belief from Persia, ancient Iran, that promotes a dualistic, black-white view of the world. For an Everyman's overview, see http://www.theopedia.com/Manicheanism/.
Summary:  There is light, think of the soul, God, good, and there is darkness, think of the body, or matter, evil, Satan, and the light is right and the darkness is -- what? damned?  Not quite.  The powers of good are not omnipotent in Manicheanism, and the judges are out on who will win. The human who identifies with the light is on the right track. A famous Manichean was Augustine of Hippo, see http://www.bethel.edu/~letnie/AfricanChristianity/WNAManicheanism.html/

Then there is darkness.

2.  Modern application.

Is this Today:  There is us and there are the evildoers, everybody else. Read the history of the concept at Evildoers.  Start with texts, and crusades. Resurging. Look at all who have been swept in - how much was justified, and by what criteria. See Many Words for Evildoer, You Marplot.
Institutions and individuals further this polarization through the use of absolutism, we are right and they are wrong, as a propaganda tool, and so foster hate, rage and revenge-death against nonbelievers. Candidates throw inflammatory language and definitions around, creating dualistic camps, garnering emotional support by body language, pitch, volume, techniques of waiting for the reaction from the spectators to come, and come it does.
The Face of the true, classical Manichean, has been changed in our day, but is recognizable. Our evolved dualism misuses the term by justifying violence against others.  Modern dualism extends into enforcement by forging two camps - the Pure Good and the Pure Evil, so go to it.  If the target of the torture is an evildoer, that is less than human, less than us, evil, for example.  No problem. Modern Manicheanism is dangerous because it allows an individual to decide who is evil and who is not, and punish, kill the Other.
Meet Some Modern Proponent-Would-Be's
I. The Roots of Polar thinking.
A. Manicheanism. Look back at Manicheanism - 3rd Century AD - the 200's. Manicheans believed that there are two forces, two gods, one good and one evil, and the good god is named JHWH - the Hebrew God - see this overview at http://www.bethel.edu/~letnie/AfricanChristianity/WNAManicheanism.html/ See Manicheanism, Philosophy Turned Weapon.
The name of the evil god is Satan, and Satan is equal in power to JHWH. Even JHWH cannot control Satan - he can only expel him. The Manichean lives in a world where This is this, and that is that, and ne'er the twain shall meet. See Rudyard Kipling's words on East and West at http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/255800.html/. The idea of irreconcilable differences has ancient roots. Pure good (us), pure evil (them).
II Use in Modern Times
A. The term, "Manichean," has been applied to modern events, philosophical developments, and people.
See, "The Manichean President," by David Gordon at http://mises.org/story/2736 Simply the labeling, the naming, carries power with it. See FodderSight, Naming.  How we address someone, or express a concept, itself shapes that person or concept.
The history of modern naming of evildoers: In the first years of his presidency, George W Bush used the polarizing terminology of "evildoer" to set the mob forces going to "get" Iraq. See the listing of references at http://irregulartimes.com/evilwar.html/
That evildoer concept derived straight from the Middle Ages, where "evildoer" as a concept used against the East triggered the (unsuccessful) Crusades.  Your sins will be forgiven if you kill the evildoer.  The evildoer is not human.  And then the witch hunts. And the holocaust. Where the term is used, enforcement follows in the Western distortion of it: Naming as Evil is Deadly Concisionism - Primordial Arborial Evildoer .
B. The Manichean Misnomer Idea Spreads: This person is a Terrorist. The Label Permits the Enforcement.
Propaganda by misnaming. These are a pattern likely to repeat.
In 2008, the naming of "Ayers" as a terrorist allowed politicos to connect Obama with Ayers and by association, to terrorist activities.  Was Jim Ayers a terrorist? The label carried more weight than actual facts.
Terrorism in that context is in itself was an obvious misnomer. The Ayers business in the '70's, that in 2008 are tied by the then political drivers on one side, the McCain-Palin polarization efforts,  try to tie to terrorism, never had the terrorist word used then, and never acted in a terrorist way. It was "radical." And aimed only at property with advance warning so people were never in there. See the FodderSight, Power of Naming.
But "Weathermen" activities were not terrorism. Is anyone educating the people about that? No. Political communication is commercial - sell something, don't inform about all you know about it.
The Weather efforts were directed at property only, with advance warning to get people out. No-one was hurt, we understand. They were not random terrorists - terrorists aim to kill and injure random people, inciting the population to general fear. See http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/william_ayers_a_terrorist_mayb.html.
2. Politicians with the evildoer socialist obsession.
Last national election cycle:  Sarah Palin. There is a recent reference to a dual outlook on life, without the old roots, but still calling it "Manicheanism," in the analysis of her by James Zogby, at http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2008/917/in2.htm. The article is at Al-Ahram Weekly, "Listening to Sarah."
III. The Propaganda Value of Manicheanism.
Candidates can learn the techniques, and so learn how to whip up vulnerable people into a frenzy:
Fling absolutes in naming about, as we saw recently at the McCain and Palin rallies. By way of update - see cries of Socialism and posters of evil Jokers, this from 2010. And the more the Manichean approach to reality is repeated in the media, the more people will believe it must be so.  Exposure equals persuasion.

Watch for this technique on radio, misnomers flying. And on Church TV in many cases where one set of beliefs is set up as absolutely correct and saving; all others to be damned, quite literally. Fear, divisiveness, labeling. If swallowed whole, they keep the flock close, and trembling, or else eager for blood.
Say the trigger words, wait until there is the desired response, let it roll without correction or interruption - encourage it. A virtually primordial fear, anger erupts. An outward and visible sign of an inward turmoil, but in this context, as fostered for political purposes by the partisans. Fear, uncertainty and doubt. Here, use the fear-words.
IV. How to Counter Modern Dualistic Thinking
Needed: The Benign Arsenal of Nuance, Differentiation, Thinking
A. Analyze the components, see the differences.
Example: Back to Ayers. Is he a terrorist, or a radical. Use the demonize tactic. Take a later person, associated with someone running for office. Find the guilt by association target repeating.
Is this comparison of intent and modus operandi like issues in robbery vs. theft.
In theft, one takes while no-one knows. The property is suddenly gone. Perhaps it escalates in the operation so that someone is injured, but theft is impersonal. Not from "the person" in the flesh.
In robbery, the person takes from the person directly. It involves fear, force.
In law, they are very different concepts, different threats, different consequences. Nuance. Nuance is civilized. Hate thrives on imposing inescapable distinctions.Absolutes R Us.
B. Let no one seduce by labeling. Look at the components yourself. Add back nuance to the discussion despite them
Go back to the Bush analysis, black white, good evil, either or.
Is it on point after all?
George Bush (Bush II) was/is a simplistic good-evil person - but his dualism is not really "Manicheism" - see "Calling Bush's Views Manichean Is An Insult To The Manicheans," by Dan Skinner 9/27/04 in the History News Network. It explains, from 2004, why Manicheanism is a tempting analogy, but flawed. That article is timely, eight years later.
Manicheism is benign as a mere philosophy describing a context - simplistic dualism, however, that leads to justifications for killing and violence against the Other is malignant.
The campaign remains relevant. The malignance is Palin-McCain today, and the mindset they are exploiting, fostering, me good you evil. Watch the memes spread, making the thought acceptable. It does not take direct contact, those memes. Look them up, here and elsewhere.
George W redux. Back with us. Identify the Evil Other and suddenly the self is off the hook.
C. Conceptualize polarization as a serious matter driving people's actions.
It is reincarnated in dangerous ways. The danger of dichotomous thinking - do not underestimate what it arouses. Use your imagination, from Nuremburg with the dichotomy created between Jews and the rest of the population, to the witches, the reformers of any age.
Polar thinking is ancient. Evildoers, The Crusades, The Holocaust, Manipulation of Misnomers in order to demonize an individual or a population: and the role of polar thinking in Elections. And Palin, McCain, Fundamentalists, whoever, are also not dualists in the truly Manichean sense.
We do see the us vs. them, love us hate them, idea fostered in the crowds responding in kind to McCain and Palin, at http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/10/mccain.crowd/. The Manicheans saw dualism as a fact of the world, not a matter requiring people to take arms against them.
The modern abuse of Manicheanism is to lead people to want to eradicate the "other." The "evil."
  • Recall the debate at the big church with the theater seats - Saddleback. One candidate said you could and had to eradicate evil; the other said you can't eradicate evil - it is a given - but you can work with it, in some ways, and move toward good. Which is ideology geared to whip people up; which is reality.
  • Manicheanism, then, is nuance, relationship, reality - not two artificial slots. So, if Bush is not a Manichean, and Sarah Palin is not a Manichean, despite their ties to polarized viewpoints of good and evil, who is, if anyone. And does it matter. Update it to 2012 politics:  same polarizing, different names.
V Our Polarizing Partisanship Is Our Own Doing
The raging man we see in the audiences at Manicheans' rallies: - expressing pent-up fear, anger.
An outward and visible sign of an inward turmoil, largely fostered by partisan advertising, and not fact.
Coverage gives credence to beliefs just from repeating them.
Air time as weapon. How often have we seen the raging man at the political rally on our TV, spreading the Word. By giving hate direct airtime, loop after loop, media and we (by tolerating it) give it substantive credence. Make it "news."
Air time also sells the idea that it is justified. Why is every stated idea in a campaign, from their ad people, given the same weight as every other stated idea, as though their loudness substitutes for justification in fact? Are we so cowed? Merit is not that hard to figure out - go to FactCheck.
Cultural vulnerability to advertising.
We as people, all of us, are easily led because that is how people make money off us - the means have been perfected.
Madison Avenue knows the profits from persuasion, and has developed how to do it. So politicians can, and do, use the same techniques to generate whatever reaction to their challenger they want: including fear, hate, even imply that the person is part of some underground terrorist cell. Just sell the idea.
We line up to buy. Groupthink takes over. FodderSight, Groupthink.
Process Alters Message.
Process adds to the message.
The video and re-video loop. Hearing and seeing the hate that results, on TV directly, over and over again, with all that immediacy, is irresponsible. It sells hate. The visual as it is happening, not just a description of a past event, probably persuades more people that what the man out there has to say must be substantively right, true, because authorities repeat it again and again. Hate crimes easily follow hate. See FodderSight, "Expendable" People and Hate Crimes (scroll down).
VI. How did we get so Hate-filled.
Seeds of dysfunction are always there. We go in that direction every time the culture swings to polarization. The difference now is that we are demonizing persons, not just swiftboating the significance of what they did at some time. The person is said to be evil. Worth killing, conclude the spectators.
This is different from taking a war record and trampling on it regardless. FN 1
FN 1 Our western tradition revisits often the dichotomy idea, that life is a battle of good and evil, and I am good and you are evil.
  • It has led us down many paths, with diversions to scapegoat whoever is in the way of our thinking, leading to the drive to expel, to drive them out. See FodderSight, Scapegoat. Most recently, see the stoking of those traditional western fires in the ragings of the crowds at right-wing political scenes.
  • Watch them relish it, and foster it - as the audience rages get out of control. An embarrassment to out country. Stoking those fires is irresponsible and dangerous, because of who we humans are, how our brains work, and when our rages get going, intellect and thinking fall behind.
Why push hate out further? Because it works. It makes money. It wins elections. Sometimes.
Misnomers. Also mis-identifications, mis-labeling and dichotomies and revenge obsessions against the Other.
Propaganda enters in. Anything to persuade the ideology du jour.
Make up
or misrepresent the alleged connection that is to be hated, and you get the same rage result as if it were true - the people may have no way or desire to check out truth.
Look at all the labels available to us, all the -isms, at PublicEye at http://www.publiceye.org/frontpage/911/clerical-911.html#Apocalyptic%20Demonization
Obama is an Arab, we learn. Perhaps the name "Barack" has roots there, or not - how about your own name. But here the connection is suggested with frightening results, as the meritless idea of a current relationship spreads purposefully in emails. Demonize - the anti-personhood equivalent of the Swiftboat. Demonize. The Word for 2008, as Swiftboat was the Word for 2004. Similar roots, but this one deadly.
Update McCain-Palin-Gingrich-Romney-Whoever. To convince of his ideology, each must engage in misnomer. Demonizing. Fear, uncertainty, doubt about others, not confidence in who is in power now. With Obama, there is another sinister undertone. Not only the "terrorist" or "Muslim" - with no reference to the extremists all religions have - but these sound like the same crowd attacks on "Jim Crow." Look up the Jim Crow Museum.  Watch the demonizing move from Muslim to socialist.
Scapegoating. This is part of modern Manichean thinking. It does not take much for hate to get out of control in an era of national humiliation. Look at 1930's Germany. It had long lost WWI, wanted to recoup, get its land back, its dignity, needed a cohesive political philosophy, no matter how repressive, needed a scapegoat.
With the economic collapse, the opportunity magnified. Find and eradicate the Identified Other -there, the Jews - gypsies, the handicapped, other genetic inferiors, as the target so the True Ones can be racially pure. War was needed to get economies going, renew national purpose.

If you question the reference to Nuremberg, just look up Leni Reifenstahl's brilliant 1934 film, "Triumph of the Will," and see the crowds unfold and unravel at the rallies upon hearing the language. See http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/triumph/tr-will.htm/ See also Germany Road Ways, Nuremberg, Hitler's Stadium.
Polar thinking. You the expendable. Me, worth it. This does not only refer to the polar bear, our fellow traveler, that we are letting drown because it is not profitable to us to save it.
It is worse. This polar thinking kills. Attacks on other "Others" - gays, immigrants with or without documents yet - Sets loose the memes for it.
Nuance. Teach it. Down with absolutes. Our global survival depends on it.
  • Look at 2008 and then look back from later years.  Any change?

Romney Disaster Relief Trucks Tracked to Supporters' Cupboards

Where are the Romney Relief Trucks?

Libertarians claim to have placed trackers on the trucks from the recent Romney Relieve Us Rally effort.  The trucks were filled with supplies and canned goods, $5,000 cost of which were bought by the campaign itself and given to supporters entering the rally.  This was intended to beef up the photo op of the candidate lifting big beans, the musical fruit.

The trackers then sited the trucks as they made their way, not to Hurricane Territory, following the star to the East, but to various campaign headquarters in the state, and other swing states. Alert photocam operators video-ed distribution of the goods not to the needy at floody sites, but to the supporters themselves.

"Heck," one campaign worker explained as to policy, carefully avoiding swears while embracing shadiness, "We bought most of this stuff with our money.  We put it on the trucks, gave it out to the dupes, then put it back on the trucks.  It's ours. He who pays the rewarder, gets the reward. Skip words."

A Romney campaign SpokesGhoul, when asked about the whereabouts of the trucks and their contents, said, "How many times has this been asked?  Eight?  Fourteen?"  And grinned and turned away.

The candidate himself, Mr. Romney, Governor, is known informally as He-Who-Is-Not-Loved-In-Mass, or En Masse as when people disobey and vet.  Da Gov continues to refuse to answer or expose himself to reporters' questions or hold a press conference on pertinent issues. The information blackout has endured for weeks. Instead, there are multiple and contrary positions asserted from "spokespersons" but nothing from the candidate.  The candidate will not let himself express himself for himself, lest he be held accountable for the merry-go-round of love this today, hate it tomorrow, and white is right, issue approach.

Libertarians' tracking interest. Libertarians' original motivation in placing the trackers was to refocus on their issues, since being swept under the GOPRug.  The sting underscores their position that if  a) one group removes the rungs from the opportunity ladder, or otherwise exploits; or if  b) Fate squats on your turf, crippling you and yours,  and c) preventing or hindering you in being productive in your own land,  then d) it is your problem, yo. Go, Romney, say they. Take it, man!

Full disclosure. This reporter is not neutral on universal and broadly defined sustenance, having recently spent time in an emergency room, and then tracking a comparatively decently-off stroke victim (multiple strokes) through the good emergency treatment, and the later no-therapy-just-maintenance program. This healthcare client (there are no patients) was a productive woman, who was fighting and instead got strapped. Feed and clean, feed and clean. Medicare, grateful as we are for it, only goes so far. Cut the fat, but get people back to as much autonomy as the condition permits. Non-family can only watch.

A nation linked, not ranked.  This reporter also is biased toward the words of Gloria Steinem, see http://thehumanist.org/september-october-2012/the-humanist-interview-with-gloria-steinem/,  roughly: that we as a nation are not "ranked" by force of others over us in all respects: by race, wealth, clout, gender, ethnicity, resources.  Instead we are "linked" in all matters of sustenance and opportunity. No barriers. Thank you Gloria. A recent talk show somewhere.

This tracking bit is as factually accurate as is the Romney ad about Jeeps to be made in China taking American jobs.  Rubbish. Goosey gander. Which disaster is the greater:

PIcking a Political Pack. PBS and Political Nature Displays

Alpha Wolf.
Survival of Group, but on Animal Terms.
Exploitation Fine. The Group Survives.

Humans:  Who of us, with our brains, aspirations, creativity; will ever submit to an Alpha Wolf, where the underclass is permanent.  The Alpha Wolf breeds permanent conflict

In times of stress, or seeking new territory, some species pack up and band with old ways to get their particular job done. Others diversify, get creative in response and in meeting their own needs.   The identity, the regimentation, the dedication to a goal set by one with power to force, look at the wolf.  Wolf packs:  See that in educational programming at http://www.pbs.org/search/?q=wolf%20behavior.  See that in political analysis at Washington's Majority Wolf Pack. Defenses, updated.

What of the wolf pack today?  This overview of Republicans In The Wild tendencies does not address what totem embraces the Democratic Party Amalgam, who move not in schools, ideologies, packs and accept no under-status to serve an Alpha anything. This asks how the Wolf analysis of Republicans plays out now.

1.  Alpha Wolf.  Each pack has one.  Finally, one in 2012 has been chosen, with reluctance, the Mitt Wolf. The political pack now follows in line, creativity subserved to the force of the Alpha and his immediate minions.  The underclass remains as such.

2.  The Alpha follows no rules in banishing competitors to the fringes and driving out the young challenger.  PBS serves us all in offering eyes into our own natures.

3.  The Alpha has his "family", his followers, him immedate minions, the ones allowed to breed but only as his power permits (he has his ladies, hands off); and there is also the permanent underclass that is there to serve them both with no chance of advancement in the pack.

In today's terms, enforce a permanent underclass: cut education, access to skills needed to undo the leader,  infrastructure, impose fear, and a self-deport for all potential challengers. Very effective.

4.   The Alpha, again, follows no rules.

The Alpha is accountable to none, makes no promises. He reigns until outdone in strength.

Is that no-accountability just a matter of animal limitation in vocalization, conceptualizing?

The Alpha must, however, impose his will on others and when that fails, he loses out.  Political nature displays. Who holds the mirror?

5.  The Wolf Pack thrives in obscurity and sudden decisive strikes, and imposition of fear. Thrive in the underbrush, the forests, no transparency, move like a shade, no boundaries, follow the Alpha, strike, retreat, hide. Howl, and human howler wolves thrive on the peasants in the villages staying home and not voting.

6.   Love Haiku.

Wolf pulls wool over
Sheep's eyes. Wolf moves in their clothes.
Wolf Alpha? Sheep lose.

Tax Loophole Exterminator! Blindfolded Tax Loophole Exterminator!

Tax Loophole Exterminator here, Lady. Tax Loophole Exterminator.

Wonderful. We've had such a terrible problem (opens door).
People squeeze through all the loopholes we have here.
I hear it just takes a quarter inch and the whole elephant comes in.

Yup.  We'll take care of all that (waves swatter)

Wait a minute. You're blindfolded.
And your left wrist is tied to your right ankle.
You can't hardly move!  Look out for that lamp! (crash)

Well, that's the requirement of this new Prez, that Mitt guy.
He says, go ahead, find the tax loopholes, anybody that asks.
And report back. And he says, by the way,
Just do it blindfolded and with your wrist tied to your ankle.
So here we are.  And the truck out there is empty.
No tools.  No money for tools, he says.

(A herd of elephants continues to squeeze in)

They're pouring through!  Over here!  Over there!

Sorry, lady.  I'll report that, yes, there are indeed loopholes.
And before you complain, think back.

Nobody made that new Prez even show his loopholes;
And just elected him anyway, on trust.  Ha.
To rich to fail, too big to disclose. Gotta love it.
Loophole exterminator ain't got no road map at all!
Real time! Who's ever seen a really rich tax return?
Where's his stuff anyway? Would help to know that.

Anybody who expected him to close his own loopholes
Wasn't at those closed-door meetings with the Big Pachyderms.

Well, that's that.
I'll write up my report.
(Hobbles out, hitting the furniture)

(Lady  muses) So there's just guesswork about what needs to be done
To close 'em up.  Nobody's seen returns like his! What are those loopholes?
The 99% have no idea -- and this way, won't!  Get out, you overstuffed Dumbo!
Out! (loophole remains open)

Tax reform: Sstairway to nowhere. No real, live returns as examples.

You 99%, no release of at least 7 most recent tax returns --
You pick the number -- and 6 months before an election.
Spirit of '76.
That person's off the ballot.
Strict liability offense. Like they got against immigrants.
Or want to.

Immigration. Romneys. Deny thy Father. Does Heritage Affect Immigration Views. Should It? Romney as Roma? Other Politicians and Immigrant Backgrounds

Romney Ethnic Background.
Explore.  Is there a possible Shout-Out to benefit immigrants here?

What's in a name?  A root?

Would examination of a heritage affect candidates' views.
Can recognition of heritage serve the Common Good.

Who are the Mitt forebears?
Start with church records: http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Dalton-in-Furness/stmary/burials.html

Update: Where are Mitt Romney's English family graves? We know the easy ones, at Dalton-in-Furness.  But the Romneys, or Rumneys as they were known and spelled then, appeared suddenly on the scene, with a first marriage in about 1730, see FodderSight, The Romneys-Rumneys of Dalton.  John Rumney and Ann Simpson.  Who was John Rumney?  A Thomas Rumney there, with children about the same age as John's, was listed as a house carpenter, cabinetmaker, a joiner.  A Myles Rumney also is a carpenter. If the Rumneys are workers, even some in the cities industrial, whatever, would that help Mitt Romneyonnect with hoi polloi.

Who was attracted to the early Mormon conversion effort? Second sons of the landed; the disaffected; the poor; and some genuine converts of course.  After 1850, there was also the Mormon's Perpetual Emigrating Fund to pay people's way, that they then were supposed to pay back. There must be records of the social status of the Rumneys of Dalton. Neighboring parishes listed might be Kendal,

The Mitt Rumney family dates back to the 1700's there, at Dalton, is that so.  There were more than the Church of England around.  If hard to find, then they were not Church of England or Roman Catholic, or propertied (same thing in those days?).  Burials available at St. Mary's are at http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Dalton-in-Furness/stmary/burials.html.  Where are graves from before Dalton?  If his family was industrial or rural Traveler poor, as many people were, see http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/voices/history_intro.shtml, there also may not be grave records.  Somebody find out.

A candidate's knowledge of his own possible ethnic or economic heritage as disadvantaged or persecuted,  should increase that candidate's sensitivity to those issues for others.

George Rumney, from Appleby, a place with historic and current Roma roots. Patrin, a journal online, also lays out history and culture.  See http://www.reocities.com/~patrin/. English Roma, Travelers, other ethnic groups on those shores: See England Road Ways.

  • Heritage comes in issue with each election season, for a variety of reasons, some laudable, some not.  Who is the candidate, how or does background inform his or her views, on immigration, how downtrodden people achieve success, who "deserves" recognition.
  • Any name carries possibilities for ethnicity; and other roots. Explore, for example, Romney. Rumney.  Even a variant as Rumley.  The surname is ambiguous.  Romany populations, Roma, Rom, Rumneys, Travelers, Gypsy; or from an old Roman town, Rumenea.
  • Would that Rom connection suggest warmth toward ethnic discrimination, immigrant needs?  Or, is tracking Romney just interesting because it is a place, a surname, roots in divergent cultures. Weck up to thees: a heritage can be multiple.  Acknowledge all possibilities, merit in varying positions in politics, social, family life. Weck up to thees. Don't miss the human sagas of old, relevant to the new, and will Romney weck up, http://www.epinions.com/review/Gates_of_Fire_by_Steven_Pressfield/content_36435103364
Here, carrying issues forward:
1.  History, Romney as example;  all families have (or claim) the rich and the poor somewhere.  Ask how people came to success here despite the poor backgrounds.
2.  Proposal for a background recognition shout-out for candidates. Bring who they are into the open.  Will that help soften immigration stances, for example?
3.   Surnames may be indecipherable or inconclusive, but the exercise in looking back is worth it in opening up the past.  For example, Romney:  not necessarily Traveler, Gypsy, Rom in root, but more mundane --
  •   We find a Romney Marsh in Kent, England;  and a breed of sheep (Romney sheep) who thrive in said marsh, and are resistant to foot rot and parasites, see http://www.askshepway.com/history/romney-marsh/
  • .............................................................................................
1.  History
Romney:  English roots, ethnicity not clear, but lots of options. Just takes someone finding the birth and death records, in churches, or not, etc.
Consider Romney in particular as to the Mormons, and who converted to it in its early years.  The religion was founded in 1830; tens of thousands of converts were sought in England in the 1840's and on, and the effort was highly successful. The converts were largely disaffected working class, living in terrible conditions, and we use as main source the BBC.
What lessons are learned from the Mormons in getting the downtrodden back on an economically successful track?  Pay to convert. Offer ideas that meet their needs, spark their interest, and self-interest. People did and it worked.
a)  What financial resources and rewards did Mormonism offer in connection or exchange with converting English working class persons, in the throes of their dastardly economic conditions.  Get them to emigrate to America.
The BBC offers details of the 1840's, 1850's in Sheffield, England, and elsewhere; and the Perpetual Emigration Fund set  up by the Mormons to pay for the passage, with the converts repaying once they were in Utah, see http://www.bbc.co.uk/legacies/immig_emig/england/south_yorkshire/article_4.shtml
In a sense, the Mormons offered a bailout. Persuasion could not enough to get them to come. Buy the converts.  The working classes, many out of work, were in dire straits anyway.  The BBC article  specifically references conditions in Sheffield, Kent, at the time; and one particular family, the Memmotts.

The purchase policy worked. By 1877 there were 140,000 Mormons in Utah, and half were from England.

b)  What beliefs were so attractive that people left the mainstream.  The beliefs offered an alternative to creeds and catechisms, role stratification in economics and society, indulgence and novelty (polygamy, God also can marry and have children, when you die you can become a god, etc.)(read the BBC article for the outline) and also this:  a belief in the individual, the individual's possibilities, how they could rise up and enjoy a better life, that religious mainstream groups found threatening.  The economics and eschatology of the Mormon missionaries was alien to the establishment.
Mormonism was founded in 1830. Its founder was assassinated in 1844. It met with resistance from institutions in America and abroad where its missionaries spread the message.  The message? Again, go to the BBC for clarity.  This references a four page article, this page 2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/legacies/immig_emig/england/south_yorkshire/article_2.shtml
In 1850, there were apparently 47,000 Mormons in England, and only 27,000 in America.  The disaffected flocked.  Like Romney sheep? Joke. Were there Travelers who also moved to the Mormons? Had Romneys assimilated earlier? Is Romney the place totally separate from Rom? who knows.
2. Background Recognition

How does anyone's family history stay over their shoulders. For example, if you are a pacifist, are you happy to find that Napoleon and his army is behind your family's great prosperity?  Is Dan, here, uncomfortable to find he has some unsavory types in his heritage? Smooth talkers?

A heritage crosses boundaries.  Merely finding German or Dutch roots in Rumley, for example, does not preclude those roots also being Roma. DNA -- why not add to the appreciation pool.  Will Mitt offer some from a water glass, so we can appreciate his variety?  If any.

Nobody gets away from heritage, or should. If you sit on the bench, the figure is there. Embrace it.So:  Enact a new invitation.  Ethnic Background Shout-Out Month.  What were your "people" before they embraced a later religion or political mindset.
For the Rom threads, we have found interesting angles, but nothing firm, see FodderSight, Candidates and Their Own Minority Roots

We understand that your forebears in 1837 adopted the new religion of Joseph Smith, Mormonism, while they were in England, in an area that had many Travelers, Gypsies (Cumbria, Dalton) as did much of the rest of England.
What were they before that change? What made them change and follow? As to money, it took the Mormons' Perpetual Emigration Fund for many. See sites there that note the poverty of the working classes, and the thousands that converted to come here.  BBC site. Was there any acceptability at any time in England for Traveler families to convert.  Probably not, we conclude now.  Ethnic or minority roots whatever they arre are also part of you. McConnell, Boehner.  And all of us.  What roots can you/we use benevolently from your/our heritages, to urge help for others.
New Rule, even.
Each candidate shall address for 30 days preceding the nation election his own ethnic background, and how America and its government policies in effect at various times of any of his family events made a difference positively, or hindered it.
Avoid the obvious charge of expedience, appealing to bigotry.  Instead of "Deny thy father, and refuse thy name," ask for votes on grounds that we all come from immigrants, for example.
Romney could do a great service.   Roma also seek. See http://www.nytimes.com/2000/07/31/news/31iht-gypsy.2.t.html?scp=2&sq=A%20Manual%20of%20Xenophobia&st=cse   Is anyone at all in Washington considering the interests of the Roma, the Gypsies, the Travelers among us, who do not fund the voting, and may not even have the photo ID's needed to vote in some places
3.  Your own Ethnic Surnames and Immigration:

Romney, McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, Pelosi.
Look up yours at http://www.surnamedb.com/   Immigrant sensibilities.  How long is it, how many generations, before the individual thinks he or she did it all himself, and can dump the forebears.  Find immigrant groups' histories at this site: http://library.thinkquest.org/20619/  Search for Romney gypsy. Search for anybody.

Also Herman Cain, although by way of update, he is no longer running in this race.  His is a surname plucked, out of necessity from somewhere, since real names were lost, is that so. What loyalties does he have to the surname, then? See http://www.eurweb.com/2011/10/between-the-lines-who-stole-the-soul-herman-cain/  Actually, there can be no Mark of Cain because Cain and his family took off, and then there was the flood that killed everybody but Noah and his sons, so the Cain surname cannot refer to that.  But was that selection of name a bad joke by someone back when? Herman?
Watch centuries of others unjustly enriched, unclean hands, all that. Reparations? Why not. Argue for that, Mr. Cain. You're entitled. See http://library.thinkquest.org/20619/Africans.html/ Stockholm syndrome elements? Why not add a 9 for social security, and a 9 for healthcare, and a 9 for access to opportunity. Double the Triple Nine 9-9-9-9-9-9.
Does heritage inform mindset? Of course. I recall Grandma in the rocker at Thanksgiving (English-Irish) with a part of the turkey, joking about chewing on the Pope's Nose.  Did I remember it? Obviously.
Salute the melting pot, a concept from the 1500's, word origins including crucible, softening, blending back to the 1200's, a play from 1908 ("The Melting Pot" by Israel Zangwill, http://www.pbs.org/fmc/timeline/emeltpot.htm) see http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&search=melting+pot&searchmode=none
Mitt Romney:
Sounds gypsy.  Is it?  Probably. Possibly. At one time?  Why not claim it, if it is. We know that people change shapes all the time, but the topic is of interest. What are the origins of any of us.  What did our forbears to do survive better?
A name of English Traveller, gypsy, Roma, Rom, Romnichal, Rom'nie, Romana heritage by appearance and spelling.  Have you checked, Mr. Romney.  Are these your people?  Use the Mormon ancestry site. http://www.ancestorhunt.com/mormon_church_records.htm  We have looked up our own name on various sites, and find all sorts of backgrounds, some a surprise.  Is Romney a gypsy name? Is this so?  If so, if this is your heritage, what have you done for your ethnic people?
Any role for heritage? Is there a place for earmarks favoring heritage or dumping on heritage so long as the process is transparent and objectively meritorious. Pushback, at http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/2389305.
The surname and heritage of Romney is an ongoing interest, and not laid to rest from the last election cycle,  see http://gypsiesroma.blogspot.com/2011/04/candidate-romney-immigration-policy-of.html

Other surnames, FN 1
FN 1

a.  Mitch McConnell:
Sounds Irish. Is it?  Probably. Scots-Irish?  They're good for vengeance, say the stories of retribution. Cross the path of an Irish, or a Scot, or a Scots-Irish, perish the thought, and you are in big trouble for generations.  Is that so?  We are in that group, so we can say.
A name of Irish immigrant heritage, whether Catholic or Protestant we know not, neither do we care except if it conflicts with national interest representation.
If you are part of Ireland, as we are -- then ask, what Ireland.  The famine-driven -- people who fled or died because of famine, and it later was revealed that there was plenty of food, but it was shipped out for profit by the landowners?  Was that you?  The clearances? run people off the land?  If so, why then pass that on other groups? Artificially induced  deprivation, where there are resources available but those making money won't release it. Do you pass on that cycle of abuse? Do you care?  See FodderSight, Induced Famine, History.

What have you done for your ethnic people not just in your district. Have you an obligation to national wellbeing? Or, if they as laborers, politicians, PhD's. what have you, done well;  what have your done for your ethnic people? McConnell.  Any role for heritage? Son of Dan. http://www.irishsurnames.com/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?name=mcconnell&capname=McConnell&letter=c
Son of Dan McConnell as derived from Tribe of Dan? http://denmarkroadways.blogspot.com/2011/08/origin-of-danes-danmark-dan-etymologies.html#!/2011/08/origin-of-danes-danmark-dan-etymologies.html.  Evangelicals may be interested there. http://www.hope-of-israel.org/i000035a.htm
b.  John Boehner:
Sounds German. Is it? Yes. Neat and tidy neighborhoods, moms at home, etc. Scrub, scrub, say the stereotypes of Keeping Order. See, fair use, at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/boehner-family-history.ashx
occupational name from an agent derivative of Middle Low German bönen ‘to board’, ‘to lay a floor’
topographic name for someone who lived in a loft, a variant of Boehne + the suffix -er denoting an inhabitant.
German immigrant history overall -- http://library.thinkquest.org/20619/German.html
c.  Eric Cantor:
Sounds Jewish.  Is it? Yes, in this case, but not necessarily (as with anyone's name, there are others who have that name).
See,  fair use, at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/cantor-family-history.ashx
English: variant spelling of Canter.
German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant spelling of Kantor.
French (Picardy): learned form of chantre ‘singer’. Compare Canter 1.
Is there an identification to the detriment of other American ethnic groups that affects his policies against those seeking access to opportunity, now that his group has Arrived. Cantor surname.  Does it inform him of his heritage. http://library.thinkquest.org/20619.Jewish.html
Can he identify with others persecuted, fleeing, disadvantaged, misunderstood. See http://worldwar1worldwar2.blogspot.com/2010/11/westerm-ethnic-violence-timeline-put.html
d.  Nancy Pelosi --
Italian? Sure.  Maiden name D'Alesandro. We all are one thing or another and usually a number of things.  See http://www.ancestry.com/facts/pelosi-family-history.ashx
Do we deny our immigrant, our ethnic minority roots, of all of us, depending on advantage and not justice.  Anglo-people are apparently the new minority, in America.  Will Anglos entrench even further because of identity?  Probably. Pelosi surname.  Does it inform her of her heritage, and has that affected her positions.  Whom to thank. See http://library.thinkquest.org/20619/Italian.html/  With transparency and meeting competitive and objective criteria of merit, a helping hand should be fine.
e.  Rick Perry

Welsh - Perry. Son of Harry. Run, Reid, Run. See http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Perry-family-history.ashx.  Some things that happen in Paint Pot should stay in Paint Pot.

f.  Santorum.  Do not Google.

We, the voters, dare all of you and anybody else in office or seeking it, to deny access to the tools of opportunity for all, in the name of some Ideology that now fits your own pocketbook. Are we going back to feudalism, or already there.  http://www.mindmined.com/public_library/nonfiction/david_f_feudalism_aka_capitalism.html.  Wall Street Occupations as the latest in long histories of Peasant's Revolts. See  http://sloveniaroadways.blogspot.com/2007/10/ljubljana-peasant-uprising-1515-world.html

But most of those peasants, and those elsewhere, were indeed overwhelmed in time, or the benefits they extracted, soon reverted.   It pays to beat them down.
I may well vote for Johnny Faa. See http://www.maybole.org/history/books/legends/johnnyfaa.htm.  Does Mitt look like Johnny Faa?
The further we take ourselves from our ethnic roots, the more boring we become, like the sassafras. Its leaves are all one lobe shape at the top, at the canopy.  At the thicket level, the understorey, there are different forms even on the same branch, 1-2-3.

Nature's variety:  the Sassafras.

Fear of Voting, Love of Gunning. Use Same ID if any.

Use same ID for gunners, as is required for voters.
State by state.

Gunners must produce their initial gunner ID according to the rules for voter ID in their state, including birth certificate;
in order for ongoing possession or ownership of a firearm to remain valid.

Other ways to conform rights to facilitate exercise of the right:
see Voters Want Gunners' Rights

How can we reasonably fear votes and voters, more than guns and gunners, so that votes and the few unqualified ones are targeted as instruments of evil: enabling particularly burdensome and new ID legislation against whole broader groups; and guns are not. Guns have their own regulation state by state, but nothing gets in the way of access, use. Is it the money.  Some individuals and corporations, even nonprofit corporations, get rich through guns and culture-promotion; but no fortunes are made through fostering voting.  Love, hate, fear.  Primal.  And all in the gun, but projected as a diversion on the vote.

Peter Roff, commentator for US News, writes that Hope, Not More Laws, Is the Antidote to the Colorado Shootings.  Then, hope, not more laws, is also the antidote to the occasional cheat in a vote. See http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/peter-roff/2012/07/23/hope-not-more-shootings-is-the-antidote-for-the-colorado-shootings?google_editors_picks=true

1.  Setting.

America:  a land of rights and penumbrae.  In order to exercise their rights, however, some persons are required to dive through hoops, jump hurdles: The voter. What rational basis is there for that, when others asserting gun rights have no such obstacles.  Is it time to conform the requirements for exercise of our national rights.  For example, if a state enacts high hurdles for voters, the same high hurdle shall apply to its gunners. How about other rights.  Consistency for all rights makes sense.

Can an executive order do it, get a process of review going, a study. Compare and contrast:

a.  Voter-phobia.

Fear of voters.  The process shows in this way:  Hypothesize, or find, a handful, who cast a vote when not the listed person, or not eligible at all.  As a response, the legislature penalizes, hobbles whole categories of people in their ability to exercise their right, with specific forms of identification they do not have and cannot freely or readily get. See http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/policy_brief_on_the_truth_about_voter_fraud/

The voterphobe.  On the rise.

b. Gunner-philia.

Love of gunners.  The process shows in this way:  Find many, many, more than a handful or persons, who use firearms to kill or wound third parties, even in mass ways.  Or, find even more who display those firearms as they do walkabouts, and put third parties in fear, even at home.  The ongoing show of ready ability to use firearms, to enforce the gunner's views used to be a crime, if the third party experienced fear, apprehension. Assault in some criminal codes included that putting in fear plus ability, see http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/assault.

c.  Aurora CO killings:  What is the response?  It is the person, not the gun, say some.  Leave the gun alone. Find a way to identify the person in time.  That can't be done, so the lucky ones can live with it, the unlucky die, and please go away.

The gunnerphile.

d.  It is not the gun; it is the person.  Then, it is not the vote; it is the person.

Apply same degree of intrusion as to rules for each. As to votes, leave the vote alone to foster as many qualified (basic showing of residence, identity) voters as possible.  The few bad apples cannot skew a result: Minimal intrusion as to rules and how to show residency and identity can rule that out.

Similarly with guns:  minimal intrusion as to residency and identity can rule out at least some bad apples. If not, address a next step.  Start there.

How long could that last?  Prediction:  the industry itself would enter with reasonable restrictions, knowing there are voters to do that if the industry does not.  Reasoning: Which right -- the vote, or the gun --  carries the most heinous, murderous result if not caught?

3.  Other statutory routes.  Resume the older definitions of Assault, if those have changed.

Assault is the putting in fear, or used to be at common law.  That used to be a crime.  Some criminal codes then upped the ante, and let the threat stand unpunished, if it was not carried out.  Let the apprehension alone.  That also does not work.  Open carry is a threat, period.

4.  The Route is eased for the gun in persuasion, however.  Enough ads can sell anything, and do.

Enter, the market, money.

The gun.  It is a market all its own. Guns are marketing-subjects apart from their functions. Add all the training, socializing, camps, teach the kids, make hunting just for recreation, get mom involved, all that that has happened since guns became moneymakers, and can the control be controlled?

Guns jumped the fence.  They escaped the idea that the gun is a tool, merely useful item for food and defense of hearth.  It now is a toy, a bludgeon, means of asserting superiority. just another thing to have fun with.  So,  refuse to require any identification, record, at all of them as they purchase or seek to purchase, etc.  Make it and the right to it a higher and greater right than the vote.  See http://sassafrastree.blogspot.com/2011/01/guns-nra-growth-timeline-summary.html

Law of Osmosis: Propaganda and Brain Cell Osmosis. Repetition is stronger than fact

Law of Political and Religious Brain Cell Osmosis.
History don't last.  Spinnin' do.

Repeat enough, regardless of the reason or the veracity, add fear, and the factoid will be absorbed and reborn as incontrovertible fact, in the mind of the hearer. Propaganda 101.  Is that so? Law of brain cell osmosis.  And if that is so, does this follow:  that all the persuader has to do is repeat the factoid, hide or ignore the facts, and watch believers flock.
Vet beliefs religious.. Vet beliefs political.  True or false:  Humans can do what they want with the world because it exists for us and  the deity will not let it be destroyed.  True or false.  My political party is to be trusted because it exists for my benefit and deity guides it. Or some such.
Then, asks an outsider. How to get the believer's brain to budge, once it is comfortable with what it has been told.  The answer comes:  Facts will no longer work.  Facts are only effective before a belief is adopted.  Again, is that so?
Field trip.  Observe, report, theorize.
I.  Take religion, in time for Christmas.
True or false. Jesus clearly was born in Bethlehem of Judea.

Will the facts make a difference next Christmas?

The evidence of that birthplace in Judea is uncorroborated and unreliable.  The claims of Luke and Matthew instead are claims by unknown writers, using those names for weight perhaps, and neither was a first-hand observers, and neither of whom was either of the actual disciples of those names.  Pseudonyms for unknowns.
Check corroboration.  Nothing found supports any Herodian era or Early Roman era activity there in excavations.  See http://www.archaeology.org/0511/abstracts/jesus.html, article Where Was Jesus Born, by Aviram Oshri.
Check common sense.  Bethlehem of Judea is some 90 miles from Nazareth -- hardly doable for a full-term pregnant woman on a donkey, joggle bump.
Check witness credibility.  Those writing under the names of Matthew and Luke wrote to establish the institutional bona fides of a new religion, not to be neutral historians. If they could tie Jesus to the House of David (that would be the Bethlehem of Judea, where, tradition claims, King David had been born 1000 years before) , that supports the Messiah idea, and Old Testament prophesies fulfilled and the like.  Home run.  Mary is said to be of the house and lineage of David, is that so?  Was she?  That puts a matrilinear line in place in this patriarchal society, however, so how could that be?

Check alternatives. There is another Bethlehem -- Bethlehem of Galilee, some 4 miles west of Nazareth, but not of the David line.  Bethlehem of Galilee is in the line of Zebulun, see Joshua 19:14, says the site at p.43.

Check its corroboration: It is full of artifacts from the time at which Jesus would have been born.  It was a major town then.

At the very least, there is ambiguity here, no certainty to the claim that Bethlehem of Judea was the birthplace. History don't last.  Spinnin' do.

II.  Take Politics, in time for elections.

True or False.  The state of an economy clearly rests with the President at the time.

False. Nothing is clear, only subject to the persuasion skills of the persuader; but some arguments hold water more than others under vetting.

The evidence of full responsibility is uncorroborated and unreliable.

Multiple factors.  Role of filibuster obstructionism:  see The Problem with Filibusters, at http://suite101.com/article/the-problem-with-filibusters-a207870.  Can one blame a logger for failing to get all the trucks through when somebody keeps piling up boulders in the roads?

Check another alternative:  economy reflects policy to obstruct, defeat, install own guy regardless of merit of proposals on table, etc. Is that given air time? See http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nightly-news/47660702/#47660702

Will the facts make a difference next election?  That depends on who wins the repetition wars.

III.  Bottom line for both.

Facts will not change minds once the self has identified with another belief system.  See Opening the Political Mind, by Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler, at http://www.dartmouth.edu/~nyhan/opening-political-mind.pdf.  History don't last.  Spinnin' do.  Slant. Interpretation.  Factoids.

If I am a Christian, I have to believe what the Bible says.  Period. What if the Bible is wrong, factually?  That is not possible.  I believe the Bible. If I am a Republican, I have to believe what Republican authority tells me.  What if the authority is wrong?  That is not possible.  I believe in the Republican party, or substitute your own.

Billionaires wuv me,
This I know.
Advertising tells me so.
They don't need jobs,
I have none.
They say they're Republican,
So am I! So!

They give bus tours
Signs and food.
I get to socialize,
That's goooood!
Brain highjacked
So billionaires
Can keep their privilege.
I'm Republican!  So they should.

Propaganda tactic. Quotation Abuse. The Dreaded Dots. Omission without Ellipsis is a Lie

Propaganda tactic.
Swiftboat by Ellipsis Abuse. Quotation Abuse.
Truncated Quotations.
Misapplied Quotes.
Omission without Ellipsis, and Access to the Full Source.
 is a Lie
Ellipsis used to signal an omitted part.
That is acceptable if the omission does not change the meaning.
Now we don't even get that. We get the insidious Who, me?
Omitting part of a statement is fine if the segment left out is merely repetitive, extraneous, does not affect the meaning of the quote.  Omitting part of a statement is exploitive and dishonest where the omitted part would have changed the meaning.
James Joyce wrote of the "epiphany" event, showing forth the character of the individual or essence of events in a sincle tableau.  Is the truncated quote as used by candidates and reporters, to give a false impression and mislead for their own profit and advantage until caught, equally epiphany? See Bernard Richards' article, reported from The English Review, at http://www.mrbauld.com/epiphany.html. Disclosure of the omitted essential should produce that same kind of magical disclosure moment.  Are we too numbed to care. Swiftboating. Use of incomplete or twisted sets of facts to mislead, persuade.

Deletions as a Gotcha until Somebody Cotcha.
Recurrent Propaganda Tool
A.  Examples of Propaganda by Omission; Swiftboating. The issue recurs particularly in election seasons.
1.  Budget discussions, Federal Government, 2012: Truncating, misapplying quotations, propaganda tool.  Mediator, Opinionator Ellipsis Abuse.
I [President Obama] said (to Republicans), ‘You want to repeal health care? Go at it. We’ll have that debate. You’re not going to be able to do that by nickel-and-diming me in the budget.’
You think we’re stupid?
[About Planned Parenthood…]
Put it in a separate bill. We’ll call it up. And if you think you can overturn my veto, try it. But don’t try to sneak this through. …
When Paul Ryan says his priority is to make sure, he’s just being America’s accountant … This is the same guy that voted for two wars that were unpaid for, voted for the Bush tax cuts that were unpaid for, voted for the prescription drug bill that cost as much as my health care bill — but wasn’t paid for … So it’s not on the level.
Little Green Footballs, Charles Johnson, Open Mic, President Obama, budget, "You Think We're Stupid?"
Then the report, New York Times and CBS, Bryan Williams est.4.14.2011 evening news: Only the first four lines.
2.  Ads truncate quotations, see http://www.nationalconfidential.com/20120113/koch-backed-group-to-release-6-million-swift-boat-style-campaign-vs-obama/
3.  Mitt Romney truncates, misapplies President Obama's words on economy, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/revisiting-romneys-deceitful-dishonest-ad-about-obama/2011/12/05/gIQAEsd0XO_blog.html. Rachel calls him on it. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/revisiting-romneys-deceitful-dishonest-ad-about-obama/2011/12/05/gIQAEsd0XO_blog.html.
Rachel, Rachel, We've been thinking, What a fine world this would be, If the waves and tweets went static, With each lie to thee and me.
4.  Karl Rove, in Wall Street Journal opinion piece, truncates quotation from former President Clinton, see Kaystreet: Obama Order to Get Bin Laden Not an Epic Achievement.
B.  Discussion
Quotation Abuse.  Fear of the Full Thought.
Omission without Ellipsis is a Lie
It used to Be:  That there would be a clue that a quotation is presented in an incomplete way:  the ellipsis, . . . , even *** and . . .  and [B] to indicate change in case.  Now voters, consumers of news, are left clueless.  The bald assertion is made that X said that Y is Z.  But is that so? If the ellipsis cuts the idea off at the knees, then it is ellipsis abuse. The user says nothing and hopes it slides by, believed.
Get back to requiring ellipsis.  It has a function.

Ellipsis:  Properly used to omit extraneous matter. They become propaganda dots of doom when they gut the message, destroy the essence of the message.
Ellipsis has rules. See Grammar site at http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/marks/ellipsis.htm/ Ellipsis is to remove only words that are obviously understood to begin with - see even the lowly dictionary at http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ellipsis/
Is that why ellipsis is used no longer? Ellipsis is a signal, a beware sign. Leave them out!  Better to get away with, my dear. As Henry David Thoreau said, http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/h/henrydavid122587.html, and here we apply it to ellipsis rules, "Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it."
Ellipsis is a surgeon's scalpel, to hone, make manageable; not destroy like Chucky. Not the Slasher. Ellipsis is Greek - more Greek rhetoric - from "elleipein" and that means something like, "to come up short." See http://rhetoric.byu.edu/Figures/E/ellipsis.htm
Yet, the weapon of choice for propaganda misquoting, once the dot dot dot, is now the insidious truncating. Dotty. Plague spots. The virus is catching.

Look back: Patrick Buchanan.
Pat Buchanan. We may not see the prior players much this election season, but the techniques live on.  Slasher Ellipsis. No, not him? Yes.  FN 1 Buchanan as Chucky.
Buchanan as Chucky slashed off the steel in spine bit. Just like the other lackeys. The plague spreads. Where are his handlers? His staff? Are they to blame for feeding him truncated quotes? Pat? Pat? Pat Buchanan? How can it be? Have you read T.S.Eliot lately? Try, quietly, on your own, at http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/784/

FN 1. The reported story was also Ellipsis Abusive - This from "Fact Check" (this is not the FactCheck at FactCheck.org) article by Matthew Lee of the Associated Press. He, too, wields the ideological dot dot dot.
The Slash at work: Full statement of Joseph Biden

'BIDEN: "Mark my words, it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America ... Watch. We're going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy." '

We are in worse shape now than when we used ellipsis as a signal for something missing.

Autonomy rights. Sass. Fertility Control. Machisma. Rising

Brazil's Model:  Not what you think.
Apply their factory-closed idea to the US.
Woman's Autonomy.
Commonality of Woman's Wisdom

Sass. Strength. Charm plus intelligence and ability to communicate.
Wise, common good, self-interest.
What has dogma and what have the media turkeys done to it?
Machismo spremacy has failed the globe.
Turn to the sensible balance.

Woman's Autonomy. Photo from Sonderborg Castle, Denmark. Attitude allowed. Woman's participation in the larger life of the culture.  The global stability issue. Attention, candidates in bubbles. The abuses, the weaponry, the concentration of war enzymes that emerge from large groups of men, the behavior controls imposed that twist a sense of self, enough.  Do a google search for "sass" and see the guns. Sass. Message. You can go this far, but no further if the gun so decides.
Idea, time come.  Anyone interested: explore taking my old world photos and make them logos, with slogans for Weck Up, or Woman's Autonomy, or just plain Sass. Put them on T-shirts, mugs.  Start a business with photos?
Immoral to choose not to bear? Who is certain of any matter of origins or morality -- who decides. Photos of historical religious understandings may help. They allowed sass. Why not we?  If a person is to burn for her choice, why is that a problem for you? Asks the wise one in the woods.  Autonomy rights for all; but always beaten back.
Origins:  no gender role is sure. The Seraph at Eden, however, is a she. Then again, he's and she's and singulars and plurals are all over in Paleo-Hebrew.  Depends on who is translating, transliterating.

Woman. She is capable of moral decisions. Period. Period?  Yes, period.
"A fabrica esta fachada."  The factory is closed. She has the right.  Even those in Catholic countries are asserting the right to decide, for oneself.  Brazil. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/09/girl-power/gorney-text.  The in-your-face attitude that is not new at all, is gaining traction.
Brazil's factors in childbearing decisions are not particularly moral in focus.  Consider these personal daily life matters:
  • Broader availability of electricity (other things to do), and
  • TV situation shows featuring smaller families, suggests National Geographic.
  • With fewer children, women are increasingly in the workforce.
  • Sterilization surgery is not uncommon.
  • Side effects of birth control pills (some cited weight gain, feeling sick),
  • Too expensive to have lots of kids and
  • Kids are too much work for the one left at home -- and the point, if not made otherwise, is that she is done.
Do the turkeys that claim to be governing us, actually think they can make a woman bear a child?  Some will indeed be so forced; but others will find options, will just go elsewhere; or die in the alleys; and the rest will wait unthe next election. Abortion is nowhere culpable in the Bible, OT or NT, for those so inclined to look it up. Sad, messy, but no prohibitions, no blame.  Follow suit, O Certain Ones.
Add the socio-cultural reasons to reduce birth rate:
  • Add a fast pace of industrialization, with jobs in cities with crowding and slums dangerous,
  • The move from the land means that a new baby is not a lucrative new farmhand-in-waiting,
  • Contraception is readily available despite Catholic opposition,
  • Improve infant health and prenatal care so it is not so risky to have one, and
  • Set up pensions for old age, freeing up the drive to have kids so maybe one will take care of you.
  • Fewer children counter the Brazilian machismo, with its common abuses, with Machisma -- she can defend, get out, leave, what have you.
  • Then ignore abortion laws that prohibit abortion for rape and risk to the woman's life. Information flows.
  • Back to logistics:  Apartments in the cities are often limited to two bedrooms.
To some Christians, common sense put the female first - and the Bible, in earliest forms, permit easily that interpretation. All is choice in cultures. No one way for all.

  • Back to expense, and a sense of self: cost of living is high, for education, things. Out of the "presa" -- the prison. Quality of life.  Good for you, National Geographic.
  • Family Planning.  Off limits to government limits.
Time is here.
